This piedra de moler, sometimes referred to as a matate y mano, Spanish for stone grinder, was traditionally used for grinding corn and preparing corn dough for tortillas. It is made of basalt stone. It is referred to as the most useful of kitchen utensils. Today, certainly in larger cities, people buy pre-ground corn meal and prepared masa.
